We are still looking for ways to save energy and money on running the house, primarily during the winter. We are looking at a design that will potentially expand the same battery bank to last for 3 days instead of 2 days. Many of the parts have already been purchased. The one piece I could not find in Fairbanks is a torque wrench that can reasonably show me a torque of 3 1/2 newton meters. The standard torque wrenches from a auto supply store are factors much higher than that.
Why 3 1/2 newton meters (approximately 2+ foot pounds)? That is what is suggested by the inverter manufacturer when tightening the lug nuts for the connection. Higher pressure and you risk breaking the lugs (and voiding the warranty).

Hastings Fire Update
Rainy days have helped fire fighters gain ground on containment. The fire is now considered to be 25% contained. We continue to be off and on with showers and cool. It is good to see this fire under control! Over 10 million dollars! Operations are beginning to wind down, daily cost is under one million. Still a bunch of folks working on the fire.

Hastings Fire Update
A cold front cleared out the air, but didn't produce much rain. These pictures are from June 6th, 2011 at 9 pm Alaska time showing new smoke plumes over the forest fire.
These new plumes indicate additional area has burned. We will find out tomorrow what burned. Over 550 personnel working on this fire.

Hasting Fire Update
Follow details at inciWeb for the Hastings Fire. We have been cooler with showers in the area. The fire over the past few days has grown from under 1000 acres to over 7000 acres. Growth has been slow in the last couple of days.
A wind shift brought smoke into our area Thursday evening. At about 10 or 11 pm, the wind shifted and picked up and blew the smoke out of the area.
